who is in need around you?

Psalm 22:24 (NLT) --- For he has not ignored or belittled the suffering of the needy. He has not turned his back on them, but has listened to their cries for help.

Lets get honest with each other for a few minutes.  Want to?

Does it bother you when you see someone have a pity party?  it may be a kid that you know or don't know that doesn't get his or her way.  Could be an adult that is pouting for some reason and really for not getting his or her way.  One that really irritates me is when I talk with a person that thinks they are owed something.

Last week I mentioned about the struggles we had at our home with the flooding, and then how God got my attention about the people of Haiti and even in my area that are hurting more than us.  Last week was tough.  It started with flooding and ending with a snow storm (if you don't like the weather, wait a day or two).  I was sitting next to the heater during the prettiest of the snow falling on Saturday when another thought hit me.  I wondered how many people within walking distance of my house were cold and hungry because of the weather.

That thought again took me down another path of prayer.  We can be doing something about this in our communities.  But are we?  Do we see people in need and do something about it?  I want to make you a challenge as this week begins.

First, look at the people you know.  Are any of them in need?  What can you do to help them?  Food. Clothes. Blanket. Help pay a bill. Sit with them at the hospital or take them to a DR appointment.

Proverbs 17:17 (NLT) --- A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.

Sometimes it is easier to help a complete stranger than someone you know.  Think about that.  Have we neglected those close to us so we can serve those far from us?  I was reminded of a truth that Herb Hodges, one of my mentors taught me years ago:The light that shines farthest must shine brightest at home.  Think about it.

Second, let me challenge you to help people that are close to you but you do not know.  This might be a neighbor you see but don't know or the guy who you see walking down the street.  This could even be the person you have seen sleeping on the street or under a bridge.  Do something to help them.  Give a blanket, a meal or something they can use.  But do it.

Psalm 72:4 (NLT) --- Help him to defend the poor, to rescue the children of the needy, and to crush their oppressors.

Most of us are blind to the people around us who are in need.  Why is that?  It is because we are not looking to serve them.  Mark Batterson in his book Primal said that "when you pray for someone or something, it creates a category in your reticular activating system (your brain).  And now you notice anything related to those prayers ... once we see them, we have to seize them."
