For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home.
It was in the winter of 2011 that we met Brett. He was living with a family near The Community Fellowship when they came to the church because they had a need. In the coming days, we were able to help the family in various ways, but a relationship began with Brett.
Not too many weeks later on Sunday morning Brett showed up, and he was dressed up. Suit, tie and ready for church. He said that his mom taught him to always dress up for church, yet if you know The Community, dressing up is something we only do for funerals, weddings, proms and such as that. We fell in love with Brett and he with us.
A few days later he moved in with one of our church family and began to serve everyday. He had been in some trouble, but these last 15 months have been awesome. Brett has gone from homeless to having a home. He went from hungry and well fed (and this dude can eat). He went from high school drop out to GED graduate and on to college student.
Brett continues to live with a family from our church, he serves at church on Sunday as our camera man and serves during the week when he is not in school. I like Brett’s personality and his character. Although he’s been in some tough places and even made some bad decisions, Brett has gained momentum as he has chosen to live stronger.
His faith shines as we talk about God and share truth. This shy kid who lived a tough life got connected to our church and the Dream Center, and his life is different. It is not because we have an awesome program. It is because we have an awesome God who offers people 2nd chances. Brett needed a 2nd chance, and God gave him one.
Meet Brett. Today is his 24th birthday, I couldn’t be prouder of the man he is becoming. I also can’t wait to see how God uses him in the coming days. Pray for Brett and encourage him when you get a chance!
God’s desire is to restore people to Himself, and God’s plan uses people like you and me to share His love and His grace with others. There is so much evil in this world. But God can take what is weak and make it strong. Praise God that He brought Brett into our lives.
As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive.
