place where we feel at home

Some time ago I shared one of my favorite songs with people via twitter and Facebook.  I was amazed at the comments and connections that it made.  Then I went back to the song and saw some things I had missed before.  It was eye opening, encouraging and a moment that God spoke to my heart.  (Actually shared a few pieces of this in March 2013.)

The song is Home by Phillip Phillips, and it speaks to my heart in big ways.  Here are the words to the song:

Hold on, to me as we go
As we roll down this unfamiliar road
And although this wave (wave) is stringing us along
Just know you're not alone
Cause I'm gonna make this place your home

Settle down, it'll all be clear
Don't pay no mind to the demons
They fill you with fear
The trouble it might drag you down
If you get lost, you can always be found

Just know you're not alone
Cause I'm gonna make this place your home

An “unfamiliar road” speaks to the fact that our enemy, Satan, desires to influence us to think the road we are on is lonely and that we ought to be afraid.  Yet I believe that this road we don’t recognize is one that God paved for us and is guiding us through.  This can be a great adventure if we will lean on God.

Add to that “know you’re not alone” because we learn to trust God.  He is our GPS (God positioning system rather than Global).  He is our guide (as through the deepest uncharted territory).  He is our friend (because He stays close and cares what happens to us).  Yesterday I wrote about the fact that God said he wouldn’t leave us.  That is His promise and His nature.  That is why the unfamiliar places can even be space where we are comfortable or feel a sense of home.

Perspective is everything.  Through what do we see life and our purpose and the strength we live in?  Is it through something that has more power than any human and transcends this world?  Or is the place we lean and find comfort temporary and based on what people do, say or think?  Answering those questions goes a long way to telling us if we will move much further.

The song goes on to say “it’ll all be clear”, and we shouldn’t “pay no mind to the demons…fill you with fear”.  What determines our worth and our direction will either pull us down or lift us up.  By allowing a low self-esteem or a lack of knowing who God made us to be to rule our lives we will succumb to the problem that much of humankind has found.  Life is meaningless without the place God prepares for us.

That is not only a place called heaven.  It is also a place where we find peace before we get to heaven.  God wants to give us peace, allow us to live with purpose and to enjoy life so that we feel at home trusting Him.  No, it doesn’t say we feel at home in this world or with compromise.  It does say we find our lives filled with peace because God gave us a place that feels like home.

Ok.  Maybe I am spiritualizing this song a bit.  Maybe I am making a non-Christian song become somewhat Christian.  But God can and will use things to teach us and get our attention.  My prayer is that we will feel at home in God and trust Him for meaningful and strong living!

John 10:10  NLT
The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.

Romans 5:1  NLT
Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.
