Psalm 112:9 NLT
They share freely and give generously to those in need. Their good deeds will be remembered forever. They will have influence and honor.
William Franklin Graham, known best as Billy, was born on November 6, 1918 in North Carolina where he was raised on a farm. His life began in an innocent and seemingly insignificant way, but what the world sees as having little worth or influence, God molds into something great. That’s what God did to Billy Graham, and his influence will continue.
Many people have honored him today and this week on his 95th birthday which included a special TV event of him preaching the message of the Cross of Jesus that he has been so known for the last almost 80 years.
Uncompromising. Strong. Loving. Wise. Full of integrity. Influencing. Those are just a few of the words or phrases that come to mind when I think of Billy Graham. Julie and I attended one of his crusades in the 1990’s in Atlanta. It was a huge event that impacted that area and was also broadcast around the world. I dare say that millions of lives have been changed because this one man followed Jesus.
The Wikipedia info about Dr. Graham shared that he was pushed away from the church when he was a teen because he was “too worldly”, but a worker on his family farm insisted Graham go to a tent revival where evangelist Mordecai Ham was preaching. It was that day, at the age of 16, that Billy Graham accepted Jesus as his Savior.
I bet you’ve heard him preach at least on TV at some point. If you spent some time asking the people you know when they accepted Jesus, someone not too distant from you would recount the influence of a sermon or the life of Graham had on them. Through his years of ministry Billy Graham has been able to influence world leaders and the situations such as great disaster and war. He’s prayed, preached and counseled in places that few others have ever been.
As I reflect on the life of Billy Graham and his 95 years of life I can only hope that I can influence people in a fraction of the way that Graham has. Many of the preachers who have been around in my life time something has taken them out because of a poor decision of sin. Graham’s integrity stands firm as it has since the 1930’s.
May God allow you and I to share the Gospel of Jesus as often as possible and to see lives change often. This Sunday we begin a new series at The Community Fellowship called MAKE HIM KNOWN. We will be talking about how the message of Jesus penetrates our lives and comes out in our actions and our words. Ask God to give you opportunities to share what God has done in your life. Keep listening to what God says so that in your conversations the things God says come out loud and clear.
Galatians 6:14 NLT
As for me, may I never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of that cross, my interest in this world has been crucified, and the world’s interest in me has also died.
The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God.
John 3:16 NLT
For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
Thank you, Dr. Graham, for all you have done to lay a path for believers to point to Jesus.
