our actions say "we don't care"

Luke 10:33 NLT

Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him.

What must it have been like to the man who was robbed and beaten on that horrible day? He was in need. But no one stopped. People looked and passed by. It wasn't until an outcast, a Samaritan or a half breed as they were none, stopped, cared and did something for the man that he found help. Do we know anyone in need?

God has blessed our lives. Our sins have been forgiven, and we have been given resources that include finances, food, relationships and so much more. Yet there are people who live near us, work with us, go to school with us, sit next to us at church and others we pass by daily who have needs. There need could be as simple as an encouraging word or as complex as needing help with their health or finances. It could be anything. What can you do to help someone else?

That just might be the wrong question. It might not be "what can you do?" The question might need to be "do you see the person in need?" Too many of us don't see them. We pass them daily? Our actions say we don't care. Is that you? Is that me?

Every day I meet more people who have needs that you and I can meet. Alone we can help a few people. Together we can help many people. But do we see those in need?

Realize because you know Jesus, you are blessed:

Galatians 5:13 NLT

For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don't use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.

Realize that Jesus loved you in spite of yourself and your situation. We can share that love, His love with others:

John 15:12 NLT

This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you.

Realize who you neighbor is. It is anything you come in contact with. The Bible tells us something about our neighbor:

Galatians 5:14 NLT

For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: "Love your neighbor as yourself".

Our actions say "we don't care", and it is time for that to stop. Look around you this weekend. Who is your neighbor, who have a need? Let your actions show you care.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns. One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns. When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her. Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved. Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?" Beverly said, "Why yes I do." My ticket to the Catalyst Conference, in Atlanta Oct 8-10, just arrived. I'm excited!

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow. He served. He valued and gave value to others. That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet. It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives. Jesus said we should do this. See the verse above. Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
