this weekend @ The Community

info from The Community for the week of Oct 19, 2011

What is going on in your life this week?  Unless you are sticking your head in the sand like an ostrich, there is bound to be a lot going on in your life.

This Sunday marks 3 weeks left in our CHASE THE LION series, and we will be talking about taking risks.  The biggest risk of all is to take no risk.  Think about that.  Your biggest success, your most exciting times may be hiding behind your biggest fear.  Taking some risk may unlock that success for you.

Join us this Sunday at The Community at 10:10am, and invite someone to come with you.  It is sure to be an awesome day that may change your life.  Jesus is still in that business, you know.

Our 4th Saturday FREE community meal is this weekend.  Our food outreach leader, Shannon, has asked for people to donate desserts for this outreach time.  Volunteers need to arrive before 3:30.  Pass the word and share with people who are hungry and in need.

Next weekend is the NASCAR race here in Martinsville.  Volunteers for Raceway Ministries Martinsville are needed to serve Friday, Saturday and Sunday with the ADA golf carts, passing our tracts and refreshments as well as helping with worship services.  Please let Lee Hobbs know you want to be part.

Monday, October 31st will be our Family Fun Night in partnership with BTW21 television station.  There will be inflatables for the kids as well as the climbing wall, fire trucks and police cars and so much more.  We will be serving hotdogs to those who attend, and we will have tuck-or-treat.  That means we need lots and LOTS and LOTS of candy.  Everyone needs to bring a couple bags of candy with them to church this weekend.  If you have questions, please talk with our event coordinator, Michelle Kasey.  Last year over a thousand people showed up for this great event.  We will need lots of volunteers too.

There are people all around us that we can demonstrate the love of God to our community by servicing and being kind.  This weekend go out of your way to show God's love to someone.  We look forward to seeing you at The Community.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
