everlasting Father


I shared a message yesterday that talked about God being our father.  The message hit home with many of our folks, and it has been amazing to hear the stories as well to watch some interaction since the end of the worship time.  Let me share a few of the thoughts with you…

Our God is our EVERLASTING FATHER and what is true about God ought to be true about us as earthly fathers and parents.  Too often we look at God the Father through the lens of our earthly father.  That means that some of us have a messed up view of God.

It also scares me because if I mess up as a dad what I do will have a long term impact on my kids and their relationship with God.  I so want to give my kids and others a healthy view of God.  We serve God who is a wonderful counselor, a might God and an everlasting father.

Our Everlasting Father is compassionate.  There is nothing we can do to earn God’s love.  He loves us more than we can imagine.  Too many people tried to earn their father’s love or gain their acceptance.  We don’t have to do that with God.  Be accepts us and loves as we are and where we are.

Psalm 103:8 NASB
‘The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in lovingkindness.’

He knows us.  He knows what we need, how we feel and what is up in our lives.  We need God.  That is a fact!

Matthew 11:28-29 NASB
‘Come to me, all you who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.’ 

Stop trying to do everything right so God will accept you.  God cannot love you any more or any less than He does now. He never changes.

Our Everlasting Father is caring.  If we only knew how much he cared for us, it would change us in many ways.  Some of us may have had a dad who was often angry and harsh.  Maybe your house was a dangerous place. 

I believe that God has called us as parents to make our homes safe places for our families.  Turn to God and let Him change your anger into peace and change your attitude and mine intro one of being grateful.

Jeremiah 29:11 NLT
For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

God is satisfied with you.  He loves you.  He has awesome plans for your life.  That is a fact.  Think about this … How is your Everlasting Father different than your earthly father?

Our Everlasting Father is always there.  Lots of people grew up without a dad in their home.  Some grew up with their dad there but he was disconnected.  That is a challenge to me and I hope it is to you as well.  We need to be close and connected to our kids.

God is always with us.  He is always there.  Nothing changes that.

‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’

Believing these things about God might change what we think about God and maybe the way we live.  I want to be a dad like my everlasting Father.  How about you?

I never gave the concepts you were speaking about much thought until my father passed away. As heartbreaking as it was for me to go through his passing, my heavenly father carried me through the.whole ordeal, kept me strong and helped me to make the right decisions in my fathers stead. The point I am trying to convey is that I always tended to lean on my father for direction while he was here. After he passed, I realized that I had also depended quite a bit on God the father.

wash feet, sharing hope

  John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
