in the Word of God

The story of a person that has been transformed by God has the power to do incredible things.  The best way to get to know God is to get to know His word, the Bible.  It is in the Bible that we find out what God says, we find wisdom for every day life, we find skills for success, we find moral truth, we find standards and we even find strength.

Yet if we tried to list all the things that God’s word does for us, we would be making that list for many hours, many days and honestly lots of weeks.  That is because the impact and effect of the word of God goes beyond what we, in our human thinking, can grasp or share with others.

In the quote I began with Robert Morris told us how we can best understand the stuff we are going through.  I have for a long time heard and shared that “it is hard to see the forest for the trees”.  That means when we are in the middle of a situation it is so hard to understand our present situation, but God wants us to understand His plan and how we are to work through what we go through.

God uses the Bible to transform our lives.  The less we are like the word the more we are like God.  The more of our thoughts that God is permeating the more of our actions and words will mimic the words of God.

The choice is ours to let God be part of our inner and outer life, what we think and believe as well as the way we act.  Listening and following God means we are less like or conformed to the world and it’s ways.  By letting the word of God get into our mind and heart literally the more transformed or like God we will be.

Romans 12:2  NASB
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

I want to do what God says, and I want my life to be set on the path that will get the most out of life.  By understanding and digesting His book I will come to know his purpose for my life.  It is a dream, God’s dream, that is best for me and will bring our the best in me.

If you want to know God’s dream for your life, get to know God. Get to know the One who can reveal it and fulfill it. --- Robert Morris

What’s so cool is that the person whose life is being impacted by God will be known as a person of passion and generosity.  That’s the way I so want to be known.  Like Paul said and we ought to live…

But even if I am being poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice and share my joy with you all.

NOTE: this devotion was originally shared in October of 2014.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
