my blessing. my dad.

Deuteronomy 5:16  NLT
“Honor your father and mother, as the Lord your God commanded you. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

My blessing. My dad.

Happy father’s day, Richard Harrison.  Since as early as I can remember you have been a great and incredible influence on my life.  You are a blessing from God for me and my brothers.

What does a great father look like?  That is a tough question because our world has become callus and ok with what is nominal.

God requires much more than nominal.  It is the opinion of the Bible and I agree that parents have a great responsibility to raise children to be successful in life and to honor God in all they do. This is tough.  It is mostly tough because of the days we live in.

Let me share with you what I learned from my dad and from being a dad.

Be there.  My dad worked hard as I remember in early years.  But he was there for ball games and stuff at school and church.  He took care of our home and took pride in our family. A great dad and father is there for you. I found that 40 plus years ago and now.

Be encouraging.  My dad has words of wisdom.  Yes, sometimes I might not agree, but he has lived life.  He has learned.  His words often have been what kept my and my now family safe and stronger.  They have also been a reminder when I messed up. These words were not an “I told you so” but ones of life, strength and wisdom.  Those words continue to this day.

Be a teacher.  He taught me to drive.  He taught me to build fence.  He taught me how to treat people.  He taught me how to sell things and how to be kind to others.  He taught how to be helpful and give yourself for the good of people around you.  He has taught me a lot!

Be a resource.  My dad can do anything.  I did think that a lot when I was young, but what I have learned over the decades is that there are things I do not know or am not good at.  My dad knows.  He might point me to ask others or know himself what is best.

Be a man of faith.  My dad has always been part of the church, but I have watched him grow in faith.  He is not only wise but seeks the Lord.  He is an example of living by faith, honoring God and so much more.

I can go on, but I will stop with a simple thought.  Be a dad like my dad.  I love my kids, and when they should up, I learned why my dad what so great.  We need more like Richard Harrison in this world. He is kind and smart, faithful and loyal.

Happy father’s day, and may God bless you in big ways, dad.  Thank you for making me a better person!

NOTE:  Sunday is Father’s Day.  We will be having a pot luck meal this Sunday at 5pm at our new campus followed by a special time of worship at 6.  Everyone is invited to join in!
