the blessed

We have talked many times about blessings.  What are blessings?  How do blessings come in and out of our lives?  There are many answers, thoughts and even misconceptions.

Psalm 1:1  NASB

Blessed is the person who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!

Matthew 5:3  NASB

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

The concept of blessing goes in many different directions.  These two verses are the ones that stick out to me when I want a definition, a path, an understanding or even a pursuit of what will help me and those around me know what God says about blessings.

Take these two verses and dig in more.  Notice what we learn.

First, those who lived a blessed life make choices to stay away from the wrong places.  The blessed person doesn’t walk with those who are wicked or not blessed. The blessed person doesn’t hang around with people heading in the wrong direction.  The blessed person stays away from situations and people who lead away from the blessings God has for us.

Second, those who are blessed realize their need for God.  That is truth of being poor in spirit.  We need God.  Stop relying on ourselves or leaning on our thinking.  Learn from God and allow His truth and wisdom to flow in and out of our lives.  That is where the blessings of heaven meet us on earth.

I choose blessings.  I choose a blessed life.

There are many other thoughts about blessings and being blessed.  There are so many verses that speak of what blessings are and how they come in to our lives.

Just like this precious little girl, our grand daughter that arrived on Saturday, is a blessing from God.  Just like these verses and others demonstrate God opens our lives to even more.  May we seek those, know them but most of all seek God and His blessings for our lives, for our families and for the places and people where we have influence.

Proverbs 16:20  NASB

One who pays attention to the word will find good, And blessed is one who trusts in the Lord.

James 1:12  NASB

Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
