step one: GO!

Step One: GO

It has been a few days since I have shared an e-devotion, and this week will be a little different.  No; it is going to be a lot different.  I will take some time to share this week a few thoughts leading up to Christmas with lots of inspiration from where I am this week.

Last week and on Thanksgiving some of our family gathered at the home of our oldest daughter and our son-in-law.  Although they live in Alabama we had a great time.  Laughing, shopping, talking, eating thanksgiving dinner … all of it together.  We had to go be with them.  And it was a good “go”.   Julie, Ryan and myself really enjoyed some special family time.

This week I am blessed to be able to be in Israel.  As I write this e-devotion I am listening from an open window of horns and traffic from Jerusalem.  You read that write.  I am in what we Christians call the “Holy Land” where Jesus walked, taught and lived.

I cannot wait to share bits of history and even some of the Bible coming alive as the week progresses.  We arrived early Tuesday morning (7 hours ahead of my normal Eastern Time) and we are getting used to a very different place.  The invitation came last spring, and it seemed strange.  Yet this trip came together with 1,000 pastors from across the United States gathering for a summit to learn and hear what is going on in Israel.  Before I could be on this trip I had to fill out an application.  Then I had to “go”.  Sometimes going is the hardest part.

Remember the story of Mary, the mother of Jesus, as an angel appeared to her with a story that seemed so far fetched.  She would be the mother of the Christ child, sent from God to be the Savior of the world.  But she had to “go” and live out what God told her in that message.  Much is similar when Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, got a message from God that his fiancé would have a baby.  He didn’t understand and wasn’t pleased.  Yet Joseph like Mary chose to “go” and walk out the plan that God gave.

We have a choice as well.  Will we go where God calls us to go?  Some of those calls from God are easy.  Some of those calls are tough.  Just get ready.  And go!

Isaiah 6:8  NLT

Then I heard the Lord asking, “Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us?” I said, “Here I am. Send me.”

Genesis 12:1  NLT

The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you.

God may be calling you to go across the world, but I believe that begins with being willing to go across the street to help your neighbor, going downtown to help homeless friends or maybe going to church.

Where ever God is calling you, there is one step to take.  Step one: GO!

Catalyst ticket arrived

My ticket to the Catalyst Conference, in Atlanta Oct 8-10, just arrived. I'm excited!

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
