using Scripture in prayer

This week I am at a conference and reminded of how important prayer is to our lives and to the church.  That is why we have intentionally spent the last two years each Sunday using Psalms in our prayers.

Praying Scripture is powerful.  It reenforces the truths of Scripture reminding of the goodness and promises of God.

Daniel Henderson shared the book Praying the Psalms, and it is what we use at church as well as what Julie and I used in our prayer times for a long time.  Let me share what I am talking about as far as praying Scripture.  Here is Psalm 93 which is a great Psalm and a great reminder for all of us.

Psalm 93:2-5  NLT

Your throne, O Lord, has stood from time immemorial. You yourself are from the everlasting past. 3  The floods have risen up, O Lord.  The floods have roared like thunder; the floods have lifted their pounding waves. 4 But mightier than the violent raging of the seas, mightier than the breakers on the shore— the Lord above is mightier than these! 5  Your royal laws cannot be changed. Your reign, O Lord, is holy forever and ever.

The simple truth of this Psalm is that …

the world is in a storm,

there is a storm around me,

God doesn’t change,

He is steady and takes care of the storms.

Use that in your prayers.  Thank God for who He is and what He has done and what He will do.  Watch how God will care for you and calm your storm as you apply the truths of Scripture.

I need to know this, claim it, pray it and remember when I am fearful, challenged or hurt, that God is always my God no matter the situation.

Go find this book and let God use the Psalms in your prayer life.  Another step, go find Strategic Renewal and the 6:4 Fellowship.  Especially if you are a pastor as this organization will be a great blessing to your life and ministry.

In how we use this book at our church in what is called “creating a culture of prayer”.  That is a commitment to helping the church be healthy and strong because we do something that God has told us to do.

Everywhere you are, spend time praying, and use the Bible to guide your prayers.

Psalm 6:9  NLT

The Lord has heard my plea; the Lord will answer my prayer.
