Proverbs 3:27 NLT

Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it’s in your power to help them.

Several years ago a sweet lady asked to see me. As she sat across the desk from me we talked about he needs in our community as we have before. She said with lots of conviction that it was time to do something.

That is when the winter warming center was birthed in our community. A local pastor friend and I worked on some details and enlisted the help and building at the Salvation Army. We were off and running.

The first year was light. We didn’t serve many people, but it was a good start. I believe that was about six years ago, and it has been a good ride. Many people have been served. Lots of volunteers have given countless hours and much heart to serve those in need. I am grateful for each and every one.

Yet we come to a time where change is needed, but there continues to be a crisis of homelessness especially as the weather gets very cold at night. We have begun a work that compliments the warming center in the transition house for homeless men that continues to serve and help men get back on their feet.

The winter warming center needs a new home and many new volunteers, and it looks like that is a reality in front of us. There is a meeting at our local coffee shop, the Daily Grind in Uptown Martinsville, Tuesday at 5pm where we will examine the need and announce where God is leading this project. I am grateful for those who have stepped up.

Would you pray?

Pray that God would help us meet needs of those who are out in the cold or do not have adequate heat in their homes.

Will you give?

It takes resources and money to get things done. You can give in many ways. Let me know, or our leaders know, how you want to give.

Will you commit to serve?

There are jobs for everyone from organizing items, to preparing meals, to staying overnight with guests, and many more ways to serve.

Why do we do this? It is because there is a need, and God has given us the ability and heart to help others.

1 Peter 4:10 NLT

God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns. One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns. wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow. He served. He valued and gave value to others. That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet. It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives. Jesus said we should do this. See the verse above. Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
