different love

 



This Sunday I will continue our study of 1 Corinthians 13 called “Love and Life”.  I honestly think it is amazing and even shocking at times at how messed up our world is in what they call love.


Look around you today.  Notice what is pure affection.  Notice how wishy washy love and commitment is between couples and marriages seems to be.  This is not new in any way because our world has been warped for a very long time.


Watch to see how people love and what people tend to demand to know how healthy they are, how healthy their family is, and even how healthy the nation or community around them is.


In this last e-devotion of the week I contrast two definitions or understandings of the word and concept of love.  We have just come through Valentine’s Day which also makes these truths even more important.  What should we learn?


Here is a good word … The difference between secular love and Christian love is that secular love is not rooted in the cross of God's Son, and is not sustained and shaped by the power of God's Spirit, and is not acted for the glory of God the Father (taken from desireingod.org).


1 John 5:1  NLT  

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has become a child of God. And everyone who loves the Father loves his children, too.


Another good thought … worldly love seems to be void of loving God and loving the things of God.


1 John 2:16  NLT  

For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world.


And a final understanding of the difference … To love the Father means loving everything that comes from Him. To love the world means living for this world and finding our source of joy and satisfaction on earth. If we love the world, our lives follow the desires of the world. The surest way to not love this world is to make sue you know God and His ways.


1 John 4:17  NLT  

And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. wash feet, sharing hope

  John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
