trust during tough times

It was almost 13 years ago that the shootings took place at Virginia Tech that is about 60 miles from our home. It was about 19 years ago that the September 11th tragedy took place.

For each of us there have been events in our lives that shaped our emotion and even our fear. Maybe it was a space shuttle explosion or one of our presidents being shot. There are many things that has shaped our lives, things on a global scale as well as things much closer to home.

There will come a day when we look back on the pandemic known as COVID-19 and share the stories of what we experienced. I wish we were already looking back, but I believe we have a lot more pain and reality ahead of us at this point. But a day is coming when is will be over.

While we are in the middle of the sickness and hearing all about it day in and day out we have to keep our faith. We have to know truth. That is why I choose to point us to God and to the Bible.

When the Virginia Tech shootings happened, I shared the following verses that remain true and may help us again deal with the pain and uncertainty around us.

Psalm 86:2 NLT

Protect me, for I am devoted to you. Save me, for I serve you and trust you. You are my God.

The only place to turn is to God. He is in control.

Psalm 33:4 NLT

For the word of the Lord holds true, and we can trust everything he does.

Psalm 56:3 NLT

But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

Proverbs 3:5 NLT

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.

Proverbs 29:25 NLT

Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the Lord means safety.

1 Peter 1:21 NLT

Through Christ you have come to trust in God. And you have placed your faith and hope in God because he raised Christ from the dead and gave him great glory.
Help others see that God is still God and that He is worthy of our trust even when difficult news comes or the pandemic seems to have no end in sight.

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns. One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns. wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow. He served. He valued and gave value to others. That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet. It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives. Jesus said we should do this. See the verse above. Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
