We look at things differently from others. Some like one thing and we might like another. God even looks at things differently than we do.
One of the reasons we see differently than God does is that we an’t see what God does. That is what makes faith and trusting God for guidance so very important.
1 Samuel 16:7 NLT
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
The people of God, the Jewish nation, wanted a kind. And the first king they got looked like a king. He was tall and built with muscles and all the stuff a king might have. At first he was good, but that changed.
1 Samuel 9:2 NLT
His son Saul was the most handsome man in Israel—head and shoulders taller than anyone else in the land.
The people wanted a king, and what God knew was that they wanted to be like other nations. There is a problem. When we want to be like others, have what others have or compare ourselves to others, we are headed down the wrong wrong, have wrong motives and need adjusting.
That was true for the nation of Israel. Maybe that is true for us. Things started out pretty good with Saul, but they ended far differently. God discouraged them from having a king, but that is what they wanted.
But the next king wasn’t that way. David was differently. Not many people thought David looked like a king, and honestly not many people, not even his own father, even thought about David’s father.
1 Samuel 16:11 NLT
Then Samuel asked, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse replied. “But he’s out in the fields watching the sheep and goats.” …
Be careful not to overlook what God is looked at. Be careful not to judge based upon appearance or what is easy to see. Be careful not to compare yourself and your situation to others. It might not turn out very good.
Look at what God looks at. The heart. Jesus said lots about our hearts as does all the Bible. Our hearts needed to be guarded and kept close to God. Our hearts will guide us, if we let let them.
Proverbs 24:12 ESV
If you say, “Behold, we did not know this,” does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it, and will he not repay man according to his work?
Change your standard. Change what you are looking at for what points to ability and greatness. Watch how God works and how His promises come alive in our lives.
