President's Day


Today is “President’s Day”.  The schools are out in our local area as are banks, government offices and some businesses.  What is this day?

Before I move forward, please know this is not a political post of support for or against our current president.  My desire is to clarify a couple things.  First, why we celebrate this day, and second, why we honor the office of President of the United States.

History.com says this about the “President’s Day” holiday: Presidents' Day is a federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February; Presidents' Day 2020 occurs on Monday, February 17. Originally established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington, the holiday became popularly known as Presidents' Day after it was moved as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers. While several states still have individual holidays honoring the birthdays of Washington, Abraham Lincoln and other figures, Presidents' Day is now popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents, past and present.

Today we do not celebrate a president although we do remember the birthdays of Lincoln and Washington.  In my lifetime we have had several presidents.  Some I would say in my opinion were better suited for the office than others.

I know many people who are grateful for the holiday.  Go ask my son who gets this day out of school or my wife who has time to work in her classroom or the folks who serve us at our bank.  This is a day looked forward to by many.

One of the things that is heavy on my mind and heart is the lack of respect that people have for authority.  This reality is rampant in our society as we watch people mock the police or talk bad about a certain politician, local, state or federal.

I believe it is always right to honor those who are in authority.  It is our right and responsibility as citizens of these United States to vote our conscious and to share our opinion.  Do that with kindness and fairness.  We can agree to disagree in a kind manner.  You might not agree with my political stance or convictions, but we must agree on is that God has blessed us with opportunities and with the nation we live in.

Praise God for our freedom.  All kinds of freedom stand out.  Freedom of speech is a big one.  You can share what you feel you need to share.  Freedom of religion is a big one for me as well, and praise the Lord we can worship as we want to.  We can share with people our faith in Christ and that others can come to know Him to.

I challenge you today to think about honoring those in authority including the person who holds the office of President.  Mr. Trump is the man in the office, but there will be another president after him as there was one before him.  Each and every one deserves to be honored.

Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them, and give respect and honor to those who are in authority.

We should also pray for those who are in authority asking God to guide them and might even pray, if we feel appropriate to ask God to remove them from office if that is what is best for our country.

1 Timothy 2:2  NLT
Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. wash feet, sharing hope

  John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
