what about this virus?

This is a great week mainly because we have come off of such a great weekend with the marriage of our daughter.  It was truly magical and so much more.  You are welcome to look at yesterday’s e-devotion for part of my thoughts.

Yet in the midst of that fun there was much the start of chaos and strain because of COVID-19 or what is known as the Coronavirus.  We cannot miss the fact that across the world thousands have gotten sick and hundreds have died.  The point is not the numbers but the problem.

We have all heard the need to do things that will help us stay healthy and help others do the same.  We should be washing our hands with soap many times through the day.  We should be staying away from those who are sick and struggling with any sickness.

I am sure you have seen the hysteria and fear that is rampant around our community and thousands of other communities.  This is not a time for fear but faith.  This is a time to worship and not to worry.  This is a time to turn to God and not to the world.

This is not a devotion about churches closing.  This is about how we face struggles.

In the past several weeks we have been walking through James 1.  The Scripture tells us to look at our struggles in different ways.  In fact we are to find joy in them.  We are to seek God for understanding and strength.

Many pastors opened the Bible this past weekend to Psalm 91.  It is ripe with what we need to hear when “all hell is breaking lose” and people do not know how to deal with the situations around the world.  It is time to trust God rather than turning away.

Read on and note the things that God says about difficult times.

Psalm 91:1-7   NLT

Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. 3 For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. 4 He will cover you with his feathers.  He will shelter you with his wings.  His faithful promises are your armor and protection.  5 Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day.  6 Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday.  7 Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you.

Find shelter in the Lord and rest in Him.

Allow God to be your sole rescuer!

Don’t let disease strangle you with it’s possibilities.

Kick out the thought of being afraid or in dreading the darkness around.

Hold the promise that no evil will touch God’s people.

I like Psalm 91 and take great comfort in it and in much of the Bible because God has written us a “love letter” that pertains to all times of life.  It refers to joy in struggle and to celebration when all is well.  God has us no matter what is going on.  We must choose to trust in the Lord… always!
