We get to serve here.

It all began 21 years ago after we moved to Virginia. There were several different opportunities that I learned about. Outreach in our community where our church and where I could plug in to serve. There are always opportunities. There is always a list.

One of those was through Raceway Ministry at the speedway in Martinsville where NASCAR comes to town two times per year. And as Paul Harvey would say, “that’s the rest of the story”.

Not sure how many races I have been to, but I can tell you that I have only watched a few laps of every race. In these years I have met thousands of race fans from all over the country and from several foreign countries. It has been full of conversations. Full of praying for people. Full of talking about life, sharing snacks and coffee, giving golf cart rides from one place to another and so much more.

But the best part … are you ready for it? We get to talk about Jesus. Not only does our team host events like worship services right at the speedway before the big race but the entire time we are on the property and assisting with guest services we get to talk about the great person who ever lived and the one who changes lives all the time, for thousands of years. This is good stuff.

Would you pray for our team that is serving at Martinsville Speedway this week? About 50 volunteers from many different churches. We have at least 3 ministry sites. There will be about 20 golf carts helping fans in need. Lots of refreshments will be handed out for free. Lots of coffee and lemonade will be shared. But those conversations are the best.

To the weak I became weak, that I might gain the weak; I have become all things to all people, so that I may by all means save some.

but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, but with gentleness and respect;

We get to talk to people about Jesus. We get to be kind, to serve, to meet needs, to hear stories, to share stories, to meet people and to share about our faith with the people we meet.

There is one reason I go to the NASCAR race. It is not to see the cars or smell the racing fuel or to see the celebrity drivers. It is to share the reason for life with the people we are blessed to encounter.

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns. One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns. When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her. Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved. Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?" Beverly said, "Why yes I do." wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow. He served. He valued and gave value to others. That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet. It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives. Jesus said we should do this. See the verse above. Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
