light in the darkness

Today’s e-devotion is shared from one of my favorite preachers, Alistair Begg and from Spurgeon’s “Morning and Evening”.  This is so good… Psalm 27:1  The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? The LORD is my light and my salvation." Here is personal interest: "my light," "my salvation"; the soul is assured of it, and therefore declares it boldly. Into the soul at the new birth, divine light is poured as the forerunner of salvation; where there is not enough light to reveal our own darkness and to make us long for the Lord Jesus, there is no evidence of salvation. After conversion our God is our joy, comfort, guide, teacher, and in every sense our light: He is light within us, light around us, light reflected from us, and light to be revealed to us. Note, it does not just say that the Lord gives light, but that He is light; nor that He gives salvation, but that He is salvation; s...

Spurgeon on prayer

Ephesians 6:18  NLT   Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere. The power we want and the power God wants us to have is through our connection to God and to prayer. Romans 12:12  NLT   Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. Spend some time learning from Charles Spurgeon about prayer in this e-devotion… Charles Spurgeon described prayer as the "slender nerve that moves the muscle of omnipotence," stressing that prayer is not just a formality but vital, ongoing communication with God.  Spurgeon said… "The power of prayer can never be overrated. They who cannot serve God by preaching need not regret. If a man can but pray he can do anything."  "Prayer moves the arm that moves the world."  "Whether we like it or not, asking is the rule of the Kingdom."  "True prayer is the trading of the heart with God."  "N...

quotes from the prince of preachers

Here are just a few quotes that come from the one called the “since of preachers.  He started a school for young men desiring to enter ministry, and his impact continues through his writing and sermons.  He had all hang ups, but this pastor also is credited for inspiring revival and many who became even better pulpit orators.  Charles H. Spurgeon was the pastor of the Metropolitan Tabernacle in England.  His boldness and messages have impacted countless people through the years.   It is also well known that Spurgeon battled many health and mental health issues.  Yet God used him to speak life, to inspire many and to change the direction of many churches and preachers.     Here are some of the most powerful quotes from Spurgeon:   “Our anxiety does not empty tomorrow of its sorrows, but only empties today of its strengths.”  ― Spurgeon   “A Bible that’s falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t.” ― Spurgeon   “Vi...

Spurgeon quotes

Here are just a few quotes that come from Charles H. Spurgeon who is often called the “prince of preachers”.  His boldness and powerful messages have impacted many people through the years. It is also well known that Spurgeon battled depression and other issues.  Yet God used him to speak life, to inspire others and to change the direction of many churches and preachers.   Here are some of the most powerful quotes from Spurgeon: “Our anxiety does not empty tomorrow of its sorrows, but only empties today of its strengths.”  ― Spurgeon “A Bible that’s falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t.” ― Spurgeon “Visit many good books, but live in the Bible.” ― Spurgeon “Faith goes up the stairs that love has built and looks out the windows which hope has opened.”  ― Spurgeon “A good character is the best tombstone. Those who loved you and were helped by you will remember you when forget-me-nots have withered. Carve your name on hearts, not on marble.”  ― S...

Spurgeon on the Gospel

One of my favorite preachers of history was Charles Haddon Spurgeon .   He lived at the end of the 1800’s and was pastor of an influential church in London, England.   His sermon and his writings have impacted me greatly. I suspect in your life there have been some people, some books or maybe sermons or songs that have helped to shape your life.   Spurgeon did that for me.   That is why I share a small piece of his writing. The following comes from Spurgeon’s meditation readings known as “Morning and Evening” for the evening of December 7th.   As you read I pray you are inspired as I was. 1 Corinthians 9:22 "I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some." PAUL'S great object was not merely to instruct and to improve, but to save.   Anything short of this would have disappointed him; he would have men renewed in heart, forgiven, sanctified, in fact, saved.   Have our Christian labours been aimed at anything ...
