what LABEL do you believe?

There are all kinds of lies that we believe, lies about who we are.   Others tell these lies and we believe them, but often we convince ourselves of these lies about who we are not.   We are talking about LABELS, which is the title of a series we began this weekend at The Community.   You go in a store and you see all kinds of labels, brand names and descriptions. The same is true of people.   Everyone seems to have LABELS.   Jock.   Beauty Queen.   Super Spiritual.   Good for nothing.   Loser.   Winner.   Stuck up.   Better than thou.   Sicko.   Pervert.   Criminal.   Druggie or Drunk.   Humble.   Forgiven.   The list goes on.   Think about LABELS, and then join me to find out the truth. John 8:44 (NASB) You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because...

shaped by the truth

I am constantly amazed by the fact that the Bible changes us as it does.   It is ink printed on paper or words on a screen.   Yet God fills His words with power that reveals us, transforms us and guides those who live by it. God promised His followers that His voice is powerful and doesn’t return empty.   The Bible is working.   It uncovers things we cover or things we don’t understand.   The Bible sheds light on the things that are hard to understand.   The Word of God convicts us of wrong, and it lifts us when we our thinking is wrong. One of the pieces that shapes me the biggest and rattles me the most is how you can read something one day and it has so much for you, but the last time you read it you got something totally different.   Because God works with His word in us, He can reveal different things at different times. I recently began to read Romans for like the 1,000 time.   It is amazing the new insight a...

making memories

I shared with you last week that our middle daughter, Ruth, and I went on a special trip for her 13 th year of life.   This is something we do for each of our kids that allows us to focus on them, encourage them and let them know how special they are.   Thanks to everyone who prayed for us. It was a tough trip.   It was tough not because of being away or just being the two of us.   It was tough because we were disconnected.   No cell phones.   No computer or Internet.   No contact with family or friends (unless of an emergency), and if you know me, my phone is pretty much glued to me hand. But this was a good thing.   We were able to literally unplug from distractions and to plug in to some great time together making memories.   This was a great time. Ruth and I are a lot alike.   We enjoy sleeping (she likes going to bed early and I like sleeping late).   We both enjoy shopping and looking for cool stuff....

why we do WHAT we do

Matthew 6:3 (NLT) But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Matthew 5:12 (NLT) Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven . It seemed like a normal day.   Yes, I got up way early to walk and to read my Bible.   As I finished walking and was headed home, I got this message: You may not know me personally but you did the funeral for a man a few years ago and at that funeral you said the only way to see him or any other believer again was to accept CHRIST! Those words were heavy on my heart so I gave my heart and life to CHRIST that week. So I just want to say thank you for planting that seed in me it changed my life forever!! THANK YOU for being a man of and in GOD!!! GOD BLESS!! This note that came through Facebook touched me.   The dude and I are friends, but I had no idea.   That funeral was 7 or 8 years ago.   What a powerful word that...
