1st Church Growth :: Wednesday E-Devotion

Why is it that the disciples were so successful in getting the word out after Jesus left earth? You have had this thought before. Make your way through the pages of the history books called Acts in your Bible. The church grew and grew. There was no stopping it.

There are some big things that made them powerful.

"They followed a daily discipline of worship in the Temple followed by meals at home, every meal a celebration, exuberant and joyful, as they praised God. People in general liked what they saw. Every day their number grew as God added those who were saved." Acts 2:46-47 (MSG)

Those verses are not a guide book for Christian living, yet they are a testimony of why the church, the first church, was successful. How about a little reflection on there action and commitment?

1 - spiritual disciplines began early

That means that they devoted themselves to what Jesus said and spent time with it. They thought about it, talked about it and lived with it. Church didn't just happen one day each week.

2 - people spent lots of time together

Yes, they did the Temple thing, but they added to it time together at home in the community. They let people see them living different and being together. It wasn't just families meeting. It was groups of Christians living the life Jesus talked about so others could see.

3 - the world took note

How do we know that? The verses above say that people liked what they saw and joined in. They were encouraged. The church grew because God's people were doing what God called them to do.

So why aren't we so successful today? I will let you answer that one, and I leave you with this final thought from Scripture:

"Let the Word of Christ— the Message— have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another using good common sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God! Let every detail in your lives— words, actions, whatever— be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way." Colossians 3:16-17 (MSG)

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

  John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
