Jesus is greater than

We know that gifts are important.  We focus on buying and enjoying giving joy to others.  This is the season of giving in so many, many various ways.

I believe as most of you do that the greatest gift of all was Jesus.  He remains the best and strongest gift.  He is greater than anything and anyone else.  Are we allowing God’s best gift to drive us and to influence others around us?

Jesus is greater than all things.  But many things are placed above Jesus. Above Jesus in power.  Above Jesus in importance.  Above Jesus in priority.  Above Jesus in power.  What have we placed above Jesus?

He is God’s gift to us.  The greatest Christmas gift of all is this one!  Hebrews teaches us that when we esteem Jesus, placing Him above all others, that we will grow in our faith.

How does Christmas impact and intersect our daily lives?  Well, Jesus is greater than everything else.  Greater than my sin is Jesus and His payment for it.  Greater than religion is Jesus who called us in to a relationship.  Greater than this world, what it offers as well as its pain, is Jesus who is the hope of the world and who holds all things together.

God send His son.  The gift of Christmas is Jesus, and Jesus is greater than everything else.  That is why Jesus continues to speak to us today.

— Jesus is greater than Moses

Hebrews 3:3-4  NLT

But Jesus deserves far more glory than Moses, just as a person who builds a house deserves more praise than the house itself. 4 For every house has a builder, but the one who built everything is God.

Be careful not to let religion or what happened in the past keep you from experiencing more from God and more of God in the future.  Jesus has more for each of us.

— Jesus is greater than Joshua

Hebrews 4:8-9  NLT

Now if Joshua had succeeded in giving them this rest, God would not have spoken about another day of rest still to come. 9 So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God.

Joshua was the leader of the people and took them places they hadn’t been before.  Don’t stop there.  God has a plan, and that plan is wrapped up in our following of Jesus who is greater than anyone that came before Him.

— Jesus is greater than the priest Aaron

Hebrews 7:26-28  NLT

He is the kind of high priest we need because he is holy and blameless, unstained by sin. He has been set apart from sinners and has been given the highest place of honor in heaven. 27 Unlike those other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices every day. They did this for their own sins first and then for the sins of the people. But Jesus did this once for all when he offered himself as the sacrifice for the people’s sins. 28 The law appointed high priests who were limited by human weakness. But after the law was given, God appointed his Son with an oath, and his Son has been made the perfect High Priest forever.

How often have we put too much importance on our doing than on our being?  We must be saved and let the doing follow that.  Jesus makes us right with God based on all He did and not based on something we have to do.

— Jesus is greater than the angels

Hebrews 1:6-8  NLT

And when he brought his supreme Son into the world, God said, “Let all of God’s angels worship him.” 7 Regarding the angels, he says,

“He sends his angels like the winds, his servants like flames of fire.” 8 But to the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever. You rule with a scepter of justice.

The Angels get center stage in the Christmas story, but they are not the center.  Jesus is.

May our Christmas celebrations be all about the fact that Jesus is greater… greater than everything else!

Hebrews 12:2  NLT

We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.

Catalyst ticket arrived

My ticket to the Catalyst Conference, in Atlanta Oct 8-10, just arrived. I'm excited!

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
