God's amazing grace

We continue our series based upon hymns of the faith, and yesterday we sang and shared from “Amazing Grace”.  Full on, totally honest, many agree that when we get a good glimpse of God’s grace we are more and more touched, excited and overwhelmed by how God gives us this incredible gift.

Grace is a gift.  Grace is what God does to forgive our sin and bring us close to and in right standing with God.  No one but God could do this.

Micah 7:18  NASB

Who is a God like You, who pardons wrongdoing And passes over a rebellious act of the remnant of His possession? He does not retain His anger forever, Because He delights in mercy.

He wants to have mercy on us.  His desire and longing since the beginning of time has been to bring His people closer to Him, but the problem of sin keeps people away from God.  That is why there is such a need for grace, amazing grace.

What does real grace look like, how does it act, what does it mean?  Powerful questions wrapped up in a beautiful hymn that fills us and fuels our faith during these chaotic times.

Romans 5:20  NLT

God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant.

The law reminds us we need grace.  In fact the more I see my sin the more I am overwhelmed by His incredible love and the outpouring of His grace toward me.

Ephesians 1:7  NASB

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our wrongdoings, according to the riches of His grace

I am different and changed by the grace of God.  This redemption is mine.  I am forgiven.  We have the riches of heaven unwrapped as the full on grace of God.  Don’t second guess it  Trust God for grace upon grace.

Romans 6:14  NASB

For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under the Law but under grace.

Apply that truth and watch what comes next.  What keeps us from experiencing grace?

Hebrews 12:15  NASB

See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many become defiled;

Falling short of grace can be a reality for many reasons, but one of them would be bitterness and unforgiveness having a hold in our lives.  But we have experienced the grace of God.

Jesus became what we couldn’t.  He gave what we didn’t deserve.  He set us up for so many steps in the right direction.  It is true and continues to be true all because of God’s amazing grace.

2 Corinthians 8:9  NASB

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

"Wild Goose Chase" by Mark Batterson (a review)

Hitting the book shelves of the bookstores and the market place on the Internet is Mark Batterson's book Wild Goose Chase .  This is an awesome book to follow In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day , Mark's first book.   You can follow Wild Goose Chase and also see Mark's "10 Steps to Setting Life Goals" at www.chasethegoose.com .   BOOK REVIEW (of sorts)   I really enjoy Mark Batterson's style and find him easy to read and understand.  At the same time I find myself challenged as a Christ follower and as a church leader.  The reader is reminded that life is intended, from God, to be an adventure and not boring.   Mark talks about six cages that hold Christians back from being who God intends for us to be.  They are: the cage of responsibility , the cage of routine , the cage of assumptions , the cage of guilt , the cage of failure , and the cage of fear .  Each one opens up some pretty deep questions for ...
