how the godly respond

We are almost to the end of our series and study of Ephesians, and we have learned a lot from Ephesians in the series I have been teaching through.  We learned where and what our strength is.  Mostly, we area reminded that People matter.

Ephesians comes alive because Paul, the writer of the book, pours his heart out for the people he cared so much about.  He wrote to Ephesus from prison.  Paul loved God and people.  He built relationships with the people he cared about.

Through his teaching and writing our faith in God is build stronger and stronger.  Paul through the direction of the Spirit answers some of the most difficult questions.  As a Christ follower we choose to lean on and learn from God.  We choose to honor God.

Before we look at Ephesians, think about this verse:

Hebrews 10:24  NLT

Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.

Consider how you interact with others.  How do you love?  How do you honor one another?  How do you and I make others better and stronger?

Sunday we walked through the first part of Ephesians 6 checking in on “how the godly respond” to the people we deal with.  This passage talks to children, parents, employees and employers and how we respond to others.

Children

Ephesians 6:1-2  NLT

Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. 2 “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise:

The word obey is tough but right.  We live within the promises of God when we obey those in authority over us.

Parents

Ephesians 6:4  NLT

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.

Not just dads.  Mom and dad help your children know God, lean toward love and not be burdened with anger and poor character.  But remember …

Proverbs 22:6  NLT

Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.

Employees and Employers

Ephesians 6:7  NLT

Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.

No matter which side you are on do this.  No matter how much you have or don’t have do what is right.  Honor God and work hard.  Blessings come when we do what is right.

How should the godly respond?  Respond as God would.  Choose to honor God and live with character.

2 Chronicles 19:7  NLT

Fear the LORD and judge with integrity, for the LORD our God does not tolerate perverted justice, partiality, or the taking of bribes.”

May we be those who are examples for others as children, parents, employees and employers.

Catalyst ticket arrived

My ticket to the Catalyst Conference, in Atlanta Oct 8-10, just arrived. I'm excited!

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
