the Lord is my shepherd

We are headed home soon from our family vacation, and it has been a great time together and making memories. Thank you for understanding and thanks to our church for the time away.

As I have shared before we are using Psalms each Sunday at The Community Fellowship during our prayer time un something we are calling “creating a culture of prayer” which is help from Pastor Daniel Henderson’s Praying the Psalms. This last Sunday David Palmer who leads our recovery ministry shared from Psalm 23.

One of the best lines I have heard in a long time of this Psalm is this, and I am quoting David… “Psalm 23 is like a treat”. What a great way to think of this chapter of the Bible. We read it at funerals and other important times. What a great thought!

From the Lord being our shepherd to His mercy following us all of life we find truth about who God is, how He leads us and the interaction of our faith with every day life. Over the next several days we will be looking at these 6 verses and asking God to remind us and re-enforce our faith.

Psalm 23:1 NLT

The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need.

There is the essence of all that God truly is. He is our shepherd, needed guide, gracious and loving one who is present with His kids all the time.

This is a time in history, as in every day too, that God is a shepherd. A shepherd leads His shepherd. A shepherd makes sure that His sheep are fed and have waters. A shepherd protects His sheep. You can go further, but God is our shepherd. Wait. It is personal. David wrote that the Lord is my shepherd.

Psalm 23:6 NLT

Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.

What a sweet way for our shepherd to love us and care for us. He is good and loving. He pursues me with His love. Like the parable Jesus shared about the good shepherd leaving the 99 sheep to pursue to the 1.

Praise God for Psalm 23 reminding us that our shepherd provides all we need and is constantly pursuing us. In the next several days we will look through the entire chapter of Psalm 23.

One of the most powerful preachers, writers and leaders of our time, in my opinion, is Francis Chan. His first book, Crazy Love , revolutionized my thoughts about God's love as well as my interacting with God. Now it is time for a brand new book from Chan being released tomorrow, September 1st. inspiration from C.S. Lewis

There are many people, past and present, who get our attention by what they write or say or share. For me C.S. Lewis is one of those. He was a prolific writer who continues to grab the attention of thinkers from many different points of view. Lewis first grabbed my attention when I was in 5 th grader, and our teacher, Mrs. Foy, shared The Chronicles of Narnia with our class. It was a powerful time that this dreamer opened doors to thinking like I had never lived before. He wrote of faith, of far off places and of strong figures who found their character rooted deep in God. C.S. Lewis was born in 1898 and died in 1963, 7 years before I was born. It wasn’t until his 30’s that under the influence of his friend Tolkien that he came to be a Christian.
