examine truth

Some of the most important truths that I hold didn’t come from a classroom.  These truths didn’t come from a lecture I heard.  They don’t even come from a good or powerful book that I have read.

Well, that last part might not be true.  It is from a book that God authored and sent to you and me with al of His love.  The Bible is the powerful word that comes alive as we read, think about it and put it in to practice.  Read and re-read the truth that comes out.

Let’s examine some of it today.  I give you Psalm 51.  This chapter has come alive over the last few weeks.  Here are some of the verses that give us truths from God, truth to live by and truth to share with others.

Read and re-read.  See what sticks out for you.

Psalm 51  NLT

Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love.  Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. 2 Wash me clean from my guilt.  Purify me from my sin. 3 For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night. 4 Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight.  You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just. 5 For I was born a sinner— yes, from the moment my mother conceived me.

The first section deals with the truth of our sin.  Sin separates us from God, but because of His compassion and love our sin is forgiven.  Get honest about the truth of sin.

6 But you desire honesty from the womb, teaching me wisdom even there. 7  Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

Truth is like honesty and what should flow from the person who has chosen to stay close to God.  He literally purifies us, and we need it

8 Oh, give me back my joy again; you have broken me— now let me rejoice… 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you.

We need that joy.  Beg God for the joy.  The truth is real joy comes from a life that is committed to God.

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.

This prayer of truth might get us even closer to understanding righteousness from God.  He re-creates our hearts as He transforms our lives.

16 You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one. You do not want a burnt offering. 17 The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.

More of God’s truth right here.  It is not what we do or what we gather that makes us right with God.  Our lives are strengthen by, led by, held by and infused with power by the one who loves us most.  That would be God.

This is His truth for us.  Treasure the truth God gives you.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
