remember the memories

Acts 3:20  NLT

Then times of refreshment will come from the presence of the Lord, and he will again send you Jesus, your appointed Messiah.

I have lots of memories that I cherish and remember well.  You probably have a few of these that come to mind.  Might be encounters I remember about different people or about things that happened.

It is times with God that come to mind and maybe the special places that I think of.  It is often the people who have meant so much.  Some are family.  Some are people who poured into my life.

1 Samuel 12:7  NLT

Now stand here quietly before the lord as I remind you of all the great things the lord has done for you and your ancestors.

In middle school I spent some afternoons mowing yards with my one of my teachers.  I remember several of the conversations about faith and Christianity.

Sometime around 1985 our youth group went on a retreat.  It was a small place near a beautiful river.  This was only a few months after Jesus became my Savior.  I remember one afternoon sitting near that river and listening to the voice of God speak quietly into my spirit.

Sitting in the passenger seat of my youth pastor’s Honda hatchback and learning how to follow God and share with others.  He poured into my life.

My first year of Bible college shaped my life.  It wasn’t an easy year.  In the second part of the year I remember sitting in an Old Testament class and falling in love with a part of the Bible that eluded me for some time.  I can close my eyes and hear those truths still ring in my ears.

Not long after moving to Georgia I met a family that was a great encouragement to me.  They owned a small farm on the edge of town.  It had a meeting room where I remember some great prayer times.  It also had a dock on a small pond in the middle of the property.  It was on that dock was where I fell in love with the book of Psalms.  Sweet, sweet learning and memories.

Early in our marriage Julie and I went on a retreat.  Several of those nights without the lights on we would talk for what seemed like hours.  I think I got to know her much better on those special nights.

There are so many other memories I could share.  I might share more later, but I challenge you to seek those moments.  Cherish those memories.  Spend time with God.

Mark 6:31  NLT

Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat.

Catalyst ticket arrived

My ticket to the Catalyst Conference, in Atlanta Oct 8-10, just arrived. I'm excited!

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
