breaks my heart

It really does break my heart to see people going through difficult times.  That is why I want to give you just a few thoughts about this kind of stuff.

Psalm 34:18  NLT

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.

There is the first thing to know and remember.  God is close to those who are hurting and positioned to help, rescue, provide and more.  And so often he does those things that others.  That is people, His children, like you and me.

Late last week I got several notes from my dear friend Alex in Cuba.  He shared the declining situation and how hard the people of Cuba are having to work to have what is needed for their families.  The failure of systems in Cuba makes it hard not just for the ministry to happen but for the needed things like food, gasoline and electricity to be found.

I got a message from another friend who is having surgery and her husband continues to have critical medical needs.  It seems to be getting worse.

Listened to another dear friend share the growing need in his family that addiction has led to.  And the division and strife that is so difficult to deal with each day.

A neighbor asks us to pray for their spouse as dementia continues to take its toll on their health, their relationship, the family and so much more.  It is like every day brings another challenge making life even more difficult.

All of these situations are hard.  But what each of those conversations ended with was the person sharing how their faith in God helps them keep on.  How true that always it.

We can pray.  We can serve.  We can make a difference.  Let the person know that you are praying.  Go out of your way to serve someone who is struggling in whatever way God leads you.

Romans 1:9  NLT

God knows how often I pray for you. Day and night I bring you and your needs in prayer to God, whom I serve with all my heart by spreading the Good News about his Son.

1 Peter 4:10  NLT

God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
