I'm Gonna SURF :: Friday E-Devotion

"Let us celebrate, let us rejoice, let us give him the glory!..."    Revelation 19:7 (MSG)

You did know today is a holiday.  Right?  If you don't, let me remind you that it is NASCAR day.  The official day of the real racing world has come on us.  If you live in Martinsville, Daytona, Sonoma or the like, you may know that the celebration is huge and exciting.

Well, maybe some people know about it.  A few people are wearing a pin announcing it.  At least some racing websites are talking about it...but it is a celebration for the groupies, like me, to talk about the track and our driver.

Do we take advantage of such celebrations or current events?  We ought to.

We can do much by riding the waves created around us to make the message of Christ rise high.  You see, there are places you get to go, people you get to talk to and stuff you get to do at times where the name of Jesus has got to be mentioned.

Listen to what people are talking about.  Get in on it and talk about Jesus.  Be relevant.  What does that mean?  It means to talk about the things that people are buzzing about.

As most of you know I am an great fan of working out as well as surfing (go with me), and I know what it is to ride a wave.  Ok, I'll be honest.  Working out and surfing ain't on this boys radar, but I've seen it on TV.  What I noticed about surfing is that you have to catch the good waves.  In working out a person has to get started and keep going.

"so proclaim the Message with intensity; keep on your watch.  Challenge, warn, and urge your people.  Don't ever quit. Just keep it simple."   2 Timothy 4:2 (MSG)

Today, the movie "the DaVinci Code" comes out at the theater and people are talking about it.  Why not use this opportunity to talk with those folks about Jesus?  Why not talk to your co-worker who is going through a tough time about Jesus?  Why not chat at the ball game with that parent about life and get them to hear the name of Jesus?

Are we ready to do that?

I don't know about you, but I'm gonna surf.  I am gonna find a wave and ride it for what really matters.  Will you join me?  Jesus is worth it.  And those people who need Him, they are worth it.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

  John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
