relevant - On Their Turf :: Monday E-Devotion

"Look! I will force those who belong to Satan—those liars who say they are Jews but are not—to come and bow down at your feet. They will acknowledge that you are the ones I love." Revelation 3:9 (NLT)

How do you catch a mouse? You use cheese. How do you catch a kid? You use candy. How do you catch a pagan? You use their own thinking.

In the verse above God tells us that the real winners are not the successful business people or the accomplished and high paid athlete or even the long term politician. He says the winners are those He loves. My question is this: how do we make more winners?

Easy. You get them on their own turf, influence them, win the right to speak and then speak up.

Silence is deadly. Don't tell a person about Jesus and they go to hell. Don't warn a person of a serious mistake or illness or situation and their lives may have been harshly impacted forever.

Look at the other side. Warn them, tell them and get their attention and you may make them a winner forever. Tell them about Jesus and you will make the kingdom full of winners. Does that sound possible?

In this day of searching and with people all around us in deep need of significance, we cannot allow the world to answer the questions people are asking with the wrong or deceptive answers. It is our duty and responsibility to get their attention. Not by beating them over the head with a Bible. Not by opening the church doors and expecting them to come. Not by laying a tract on the table. We speak to them by finding a way to be heard. Use Billboards and radio commercials. Use the water fountain at work (like when Jesus talked to the woman at the well). Wear a Christian t-shirt with a message. Go see a friend who is lost with the intention of loving them to Jesus.

Simply put, we need to find some way to get the message out.

"And the master said to the slave, 'Go out into the highways and along the hedges, and compel them to come in, so that my house may be filled." Luke 14:23 (NASB)

Friends, we must find ways to be relevant because what we have is what the world needs.

This week with the opening of the movie "The DaVinci Code" we have an opportunity to talk about Jesus in places that may not have been ready before. Talk it up. Step into unknown territory and on their turf. Be relevant. Let people know that Jesus is the answer.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
