Who's Teaching Truth? :: Wednesday E-Devotion

Here is a big thought, especially for church people, that ought to make us stop and think: "The theologians of our day are the movie makers and song writers."

Think about it.

Jesus intentional did everything He did. There were no chance messages or off the cuff conversations. He not only knew what to say but just what a person would need. As we become more like Jesus, our words and walk will be more intentional. Do you think?

As parents we are told to teach God's truth to our kids all the time. As part of God's family we are to share our testimonies with those we meet. As compassionate people we are to help those in need and lift those who have fallen. As believers we are to care about and passionately share the truth. Do you see where I am coming from?

"Use your heads as you live and work among outsiders. Don't miss a trick. Make the most of every opportunity. Be gracious in your speech. The goal is to bring out the best in others in a conversation, not put them down, not cut them out." Colossians 4:5-6 (MSG)

So, how is it that the movie makers and the song writers are today's spiritual teachers? Easy. The people who don't darken the door of the church have to cling to the truth they are confronted with, even if it is not the truth. Some people will take a twisted truth from a movie and make it their code to live by. Others will hear a moving and relevant song and use it as truth to talk about each day.

Our question has to be: how can we get God's truth to those who don't come to church? The answer is: we take the truth to them as work, on the street, at the store and beyond. And we do this with intentionality.

"It's the same all over the world. The Message bears fruit and gets larger and stronger, just as it has in you. From the very first day you heard and recognized the truth of what God is doing, you've been hungry for more." Colossians 1:6 (MSG)

Who's teaching truth? Who are we, the church, going to let teach truth? To do nothing is Not an option.

"My dear friends, if you know people who have wandered off from God's truth, don't write them off. Go after them. Get them back and you will have rescued precious lives from destruction and prevented an epidemic of wandering away from God."

James 5:19-20 (MSG)

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

  John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
