You Are Worthy! :: Monday E-Devotion

"He comes after me, but he is not in second place to me. I'm not even worthy to hold his coat for him." John 1:27 (MSG)

That was a quote from the guy we call John the Baptist, and he was talking about Jesus. His real belief was that he is not worthy to hold Jesus' coat or to baptize Him or anything. Have you ever been there?

Humility is an awesome and needed gift. We must see ourselves as empty without God and with nothing good in us without Him. 1 Peter 5 tells us to choose humility, and God will honor us. Philippians 2 relates how we are to be humble like Jesus was. I am not turning the words around or changing the story with this devotion. What I am saying is this:

Jesus makes you worthy!

A lady sat in my office last week and said she was trying to get things, her life, back together so she could be closer to God. I reminded her that the first step to getting things together was giving it all to God.

I remember talking to a young man who couldn't get rid of the shame and guilt of his sin, and I reminded him that God would not only forgive but forget all he had done.

Finally, I remember many times where I needed to hear, see and know how God makes me worthy. He accepts me just like I am, warts and all.

Jesus makes you worthy. Repeat this: you are worthy! The only way that is possible is by believing what God has said and by going in His direction. Don't allow fear to keep you from God. Don't allow shame to get in your way. Don't let anything keep you from knowing that God loves you, accepts you and makes you worthy!

Those are facts. You are worthy!

"The fundamental fact of existence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It's our handle on what we can't see...It's impossible to please God apart from faith. And why? Because anyone who wants to approach God must believe both that he exists and that he cares enough to respond to those who seek him." Hebrews 11:1-6 (MSG)

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
