"So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it." Hebrews 2:1 (NLT)
One of my favorite places ... the beach. Several times this summer as the mighty men and kids we vacation with played in the ocean we noticed how we were drifting because of the power of the water. Sometimes it was a slow and gentle drift. Other times it was a quick and powerful pull to help us drift. We where moving away from the place we needed to be.
The scripture above illustrates for us what it is to leave the best for what seems culturally right or comfortable. The drift could be for many reasons: personal compromise, public opinion, growing sin, indifference or countless other points.
Fact is: people drift. Fact is: we will drift if we don't stay close to God. Read on.
"The message God delivered through angels has always proved true, and the people were punished for every violation of the law and every act of disobedience. What makes us think that we can escape if we are indifferent to this great salvation that was announced by the Lord Jesus himself?..." Hebrews 2:2-3 (NLT)
Indifference has lots of different shades to it, yet it is the cause of almost all drifting. Drifting is best described as losing spiritual sensivity. All of us have done that. All of us know better.
Are you drifting?
This summer we saw a great movie, at least I think it was great. It was "Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift" about racers and their cars that would drift during the race. They meant to drift. It took skill to drift and purpose.
You know, if we keep our eyes on God and listen to His voice it will take our personal choice to begin to drift. But if we don't keep our eyes and ears on God drifting just happens. Drifting is dangerous, and I pray that we will take this fact seriously.
What happens when we move away from God. Are you drifting?
"As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ." Ephesians 4:14-15 (NASB)
