A New Language :: Thursday E-Devotion

This week I have had the privilege of meeting some missionaries from across our country and across the world. Some of them speak pretty weird languages that I just don’t understand.

You know where I am going with this thought. People have to speak the language of the people they seek to interact with. It may be for business or family or even for ministry. Fact is, God has not called us to make people like us or to Americanize those from other nations. God has called us to win people to Jesus. Often that will change the way we look at things.

The American way is not always the right way, and often very different from what God says is true and original being like Jesus. Our calling is not to a land or to a church or even to a people group. Our calling is to Him and to give Him to others.

Paul the apostle said that He was willing to do whatever it takes to win as many people as possible. I know I have shared this with you before, but here is that Scripture from Paul:

“…Yes, I try to find common ground with everyone so that I might bring them to Christ. I do all this to spread the Good News, and in doing so I enjoy its blessings.” 1 Corinthians 9:22-23 (NLT)

That might mean that you learn a new language, change your clothing style, move to a new area of town, or simply put yourself into a new part of the culture you already live in. We have to change things to get the word out. We never change the message: Jesus saves. We do whatever we have to get the word out.

I am being challenged and challenging others to think these thoughts in a very real and big way as we walk into a new adventure of a new church and seek to win lost people to Christ. To learn a new language for us means that we speak the language of lost people. Then we do all we can to be heard by those who need Jesus.

As I close today’s devotion, I am going to list the people that Paul talked about the chapter I quoted from above. These are the people we must win to Jesus by learning a new language or a new way of getting the word out!

Sharing with those I have to serve…

Sharing with those who love the law or are legalistic…

Sharing with those don’t live by the law or are rebels…

Sharing with those who are weak and have big needs…

Sharing with anyone who will listen…

My brother and his family are moving to Wales so I have decided to learn Welsh, not because I think I will need it when I go visit but I think it could be interesting and a way to pass the evenings. The problem is I have no idea where to start! Welsh is not as widely spoke as languages such as French and German so I am having trouble locating a tutor. So I have decided that I am going to do it myself online. Does anyone have any experience of learning language online? Is it easy when there’s no one to speak to? Also what are the prices like?

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

  John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
