Honor Them! // Friday E-Devotion

“Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and import duties, and give respect and honor to all to whom it is due.” Romans 13:7 (NLT)

Years and years ago the 1st of November was made All Saints Day, and now we have come to know the day before that as Halloween. Literally it is the day before the holy day to do bad stuff. No, I am not knocking the fun our children and we have on that day, but what I am asking you to do is make sure that you honor God with it all.

October is Pastor Appreciation month. I want to say a hearty THANK YOU to The Community Fellowship for loving on me and my family. I am honored to serve such a great group of people. But have you honored your pastor and church staff? This is the last weekend of the month, your last chance. Go get a card and put something special in it. Buy them something they need. Baby-sit their kids. Buy him a suit if you can. Just do something. Far too often these people are overworked and under appreciated (I am not speaking personally). We pastors love what we do and love the people we get to work with, but let these people know that they are doing a good job and you love them. Just do it. Don’t leave it to someone else.

Who do we need to honor? Yes, we must honor our God. That is a given. We need to honor our parents and those in authority over us. But there are other people we need to honor, and I am learning this in so many ways.

Find people who don’t feel worthy and honor them. I was at our local school yesterday and ran into a girl that is having a rough time and feeling less than good. How simple it was for me to give her a hug and tell her that Jesus and I love her and she is special. That is giving honor. Sometimes we think we are honoring people, but our actions speak differently. Check your actions.

What does God say about honoring people?

“Give honor to the LORD for the glory of his name…” Psalms 29:2 (NLT)

“…those members of the body which we deem less honorable, on these we bestow more abundant
honor…” 1 Corinthians 12:23 (NASB)

“Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything your land produces.” Proverbs 3:9 (NLT)

“…those who help the poor
honor him.” Proverbs 14:31 (NLT)

“Fear of the LORD teaches a person to be wise; humility precedes
honor.” Proverbs 15:33 (NLT)

“So God has put the body together in such a way that extra
honor and care are given to those parts that have less dignity.” 1 Corinthians 12:24 (NLT)

“Don't be selfish; don't live to make a good impression on others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself. Don't think only about your own affairs, but be interested in others, too, and what they are doing. Your attitude should be the same that Christ Jesus had.” Philippians 2:3-5 (NLT)

As I close I want to honor a few people that have greatly touched my life as of late … Art Rogers (my parent’s pastor), GH Vaughan (friend and local pastor), my parents (you go the extra mile so often for my family), JULIE (thank you and I love you) … I have to remember ‘to give honor to whom honor is due’, and you guys deserve it big time!

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you

why is it Good Friday?

Holy Week is the time we focus on God and His gift of salvation.  We come to Friday.  The day we remember the cross, Jesus’ death and all God has done for you and me   Why do they call this day “Good Friday” because it doesn’t seems good?   Jesus was treated as a criminal.  He was beaten so much that He could not recognize Him.  His pain would have been too much for you or me to endure.  That is especially from Scripture I’ve read or as in the movie the  Passion of the Christ .   Yet it is a good day.  It is Good Friday because God had our good in His heart.  What Jesus did that day changed our forever direction. Here are some thoughts that come to me:   He is Redemption and Redeemer   He too our Pain and Punishment   He is our Righteousness and Reality   He is the Savior and Life   All of those happened from the cross.  It was meant for the worst lawbreakers.  It was not meant for a Savior who never broke a law.  It was lifted high so that onlookers could see the price Jesus.   Look

Day 8 in Cuba

We have just come off and incredible weekend, and it is day 8 of the mission trip in Cuba.  Thank you to all who have been praying for this trip, the mission team and the impact it will have on those we serve.   Please don’t stop praying. Last week Alex and I served with a mission team in the mountains of southern Cuba.  There were several challenges, but God gave us safety, provision and opportunity to serve some of the sweetest people I have ever met.  No running water… sporadic electricity generated by a small, logo dammed up river, no transportation other than animals, limited food sources and more.  These people love the Lord and sharing their faith with others. Over the weekend we made our way back to Havana.  On Friday our vehicle broke down leaving us on the side of the road for several hours.  We then boarded a bus and rode 14 hours.  We arrived safely and even got some rest. Sunday was so, so good.  We visited two partner churches.  In the morning we were with one church that
