The Flannel Shirt // Thursday E-Devotion

Yesterday was a day of prayer, of learning and of watching in some many ways. Thank you to those of you who set some time aside to pray for The Community Fellowship.

“Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and wonderful results.” James 5:16 (NLT)

“Think of ways to
encourage one another to outbursts of love and good deeds.” Hebrews 10:24 (NLT)

“As each
one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” 1 Peter 4:10 (NASB)

At our lunch time prayer meeting our little boy got sick and proceeded to ruin my precious wife’s shirt. Honestly, I was getting sick as well. Thankfully one of our leaders had an extra shirt in his truck and offered his flannel shirt to my wife. That was gracious, and she was grateful.

The day continued in all ready hurried fashion with much being accomplished and many people being encouraged. I arrived at home in the early evening, and there my precious bride was wearing the same shirt that she said was ‘extremely comfortable’ (and in my opinion looked good on her). Then it hit me. This dude in our church met a real need in our lives and his graciousness continues.

What did the flannel shirt do for us? It gave us comfort when things were getting uncomfortable. It gave us something clean when everything was a mess. It gave us a way when we didn’t know just what to do.

Sounds a bit like what Jesus did for us and what He calls us to do for others. I believe that is our call for action during the Christmas season and throughout the year. That is to give what we have to see that others are helped in Jesus’ name. Simply put, give. Whatever you have, big or little, give.

Watching a TV news show last night I learned about the charitable habits of people in America. Did you know the highest percentage of people who give to the church and to charity are not the rich or middle class? It is the working poor. The rich may give the most dollars, but the poor and not rich give a much higher percentage of what they have to help others.

Who will you give the flannel shirt to today and this Christmas? Will you give it away? Sometimes the simplest offer will be the biggest blessing God will use.

“For even I, the Son of Man, came here not to be served but to serve others, and to give my life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:28 (NLT)

“Now that you've cleaned up your lives by following the truth, love
one another as if your lives depended on it.” 1 Peter 1:22 (MSG)

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
