We are Worthy // Friday E-Devotion

Thoughts streaming through my head like a wind whirling before a storm and even like fast falling drops of rain. There I sit one day and think about this. The next day I stood in the rain with the same thoughts.

It is the cross Jesus died on. We have to believe it and hold it and know that without it we have no hope. For years I have watched scenes from movies and even some from the stories in my mind and saw that I was to be, you were to be on the cross. Why? Sin puts us there. But He was sinless. He was perfect. We deserved death, not life. We deserve now punishment, not forgiveness.

Stick with me. We are not worthy, but Jesus …

(Lyrics from FFH’s song “On My Cross”)

Those were my nails
That was my crown
That pierced Your hands and Your brow
Those were my thorns
Those were my scorns
Those were my tears that fell down
And just as You said it would be
You did it all for me
After You counted the cost
You took my shame, my blame
On my cross

Literally, Jesus took everything that was meant for me and for every person who ever lived and made them His own. The thoughts must roar through our minds like the deafening sound of a lion or rush through our hearts like the waters of a raging river. Why? Because we are worthy all because of Him.

“Although he died on the cross in weakness, he now lives by the mighty power of God. We, too, are weak, but we live in him and have God's power—the power we use in dealing with you.” 2 Corinthians 13:4 (NLT)

“He personally carried away our sins in his own body on
the cross so we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. You have been healed by his wounds!” 1 Peter 2:24 (NLT)

“So this is
the point: The law no longer holds you in its power, because you died to its power when you died with Christ on the cross. And now you are united with the one who was raised from the dead. As a result, you can produce good fruit, that is, good deeds for God.” Romans 7:4 (NLT)

We need to think these thoughts and hear these truths and let them settle in the place of reality in our lives. We are worthy because of Jesus!

“So we praise God for the wonderful kindness he has poured out on us because we belong to his dearly loved Son. He is so rich in kindness that he purchased our freedom through the blood of his Son, and our sins are forgiven. 8 He has showered his kindness on us, along with all wisdom and understanding.” Ephesians 1:6-8 (NLT)

A story: I listened to a lady missionary this week talk about walking to a village several hours from hers in some remote part of the world. As she finished telling the stories of Jesus, His love and forgiveness as we believe in Him, the missionary said she would return the following week to tell more stories. At that moment an elderly lady stopped the missionary and asked if she would come and tell the same stories to the rest of her family and neighbors. In the coming weeks hundreds of the people in that small village heard that Jesus made them worthy, and they accepted Him.

That is why we are worthy…all to tell His story!

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
