hearing from God at Christmas // Monday E-Devotion

As I sit and listen, so often drawn to this place when too much is going on, I hear a voice that is pleasant, calling and full of comfort. In that voice there is peace and patience. There is light and vision. There is safety and at the same time huge adventure. In this voice is life that is changing other lives.

Today, I am not able to say much but am listening and touched. To keep me from talking is a big deal, as some of you know. Here is refreshment. Here is strength.

“Anyone who is willing to hear should listen to the Spirit and understand what the Spirit is saying to the churches. Everyone who is victorious will eat from the tree of life in the paradise of God.” Revelation 2:7 (NLT)

“But when the Father sends the Counselor as my representative—and by the Counselor I mean the Holy
Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I myself have told you.” John 14:26 (NLT)

Here is the Holy Spirit of God ministering to me, the child of God. He wants to do the same for you. God is speaking. Are we listening? Hearing and knowing Him changes us in big ways. Hearing Him and following Him leads to awesome days. We will also be led to quiet places to hear Him some more.

I am reminded of one of the most special places I know. It is a quiet, insignificant pond in south Georgia, near Vidalia. For almost a year a couple times each week I would go sit, listen and learn. God used the Psalms to teach me and strengthen me in those simple days. I was then unmarried, young and seeking. God was there…just as He is today.

A song hit my heart this weekend, and now I share it with you (“Word of God Speak” by Mercy Me):

I'm finding myself at a loss for words
And the funny thing is it's okay
The last thing I need is to be heard
But to hear what You would say…

Word of God speak
Would You pour down like rain
Washing my eyes to see
Your majesty
To be still and know
That You're in this place
Please let me stay and rest
In Your holiness
Word of God speak…

I'm finding myself in the midst of You
Beyond the music, beyond the noise
All that I need is to be with You
And in the quiet hear Your voice…

One day last week my wonderful wife went shopping for a couple hours leaving me with the children. It was quiet, but it was loud for me. I sat in my chair with our little boy for what seemed like a long time. He talked and played. All he wanted me to do was just be there, sit still, watch and listen. That spoke volumes to me.

All God wants from us is just to be with Him, to sit still, watch and listen. He wants to strengthen us, speak to us and love on us every chance we will give Him.

This Christmas season, take some time to let God love on you. Because He does. He loves you in big ways and with all that He is.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
