on your side // Thursday E-Devotion

The new year and our new church bring with them many challenges. Some are big and some are small. Yet each thing we face is an opportunity to see God, hear God and watch God work. I recently said in an e-devotion that God ought to get bigger and better each day we walk with Him. To limit God is far from what we can, should and need to be doing?

David had an awesome relationship with God. I try to start each day with reading from Proverbs and some times I add Psalms. Today’s Psalm was eye opening for me.

We find David in a tough place in life. We’ve all been there. He feels alone and even separated from God who seems to be silent. What we have to understand is that God is not being silent. He is working in His ways in our lives. This Psalm together with the book I reading is opening my mind and heart to the stuff that only God can do. He is able, yet we limit God. Can you see that in your prayers or in your thoughts about God? We won’t pray the big dreams or expect miracles, but we will pray for the easy stuff we know God does every day.

What I got from David in Psalm 35 are things we need to deal with every day. So here are the verses and a couple thoughts from me:

Psalm 35:2 (nlt) --- Put on your armor and take up your shield. Prepare for battle and come to my aid.

God not only fights for His kids, us, but He is with us all the time. Would outlook be different if we expected and understood His presence?

Psalm 35:9-10 (nlt) --- Then I will rejoice in the Lord. I will be glad when he rescues me. I will praise Him from the bottom of my heart; Lord who can compare to you?...

Nothing and no one can compare to God. He is all-knowing, all-powerful and everywhere all the time. He is limitless when we are so very limited.

Finally, one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle that helps us see and know that God is on our side is prayer. Be challenged, as I have today, to ask for the big and the good stuff from God. Not only is He willing and able, but He wants His kids to have the best and to be part of His awesome and endless plans. Just like a parent gets excited over His children, God gets excited about us and wants us to succeed.

Ever feel like God is setting you up to fail? The truth could not be so different any other place. God is always setting us up for success. Let’s see it that way and no other!

James 1:6 (nlt) --- But when you ask Him, be sure that you expect Him to answer, for a doubtful mind is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is driven by the wind.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
