it takes everyone // Wednesday E-Devotion

We are continuing at The Community Fellowship our study of "Get Fired Up to Serve God: a spiritual gifts study" tonight and will be looking deeper at the ways God has touched the church so we will impact and encourage others.

1 Peter 4:10 NLT --- God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.

Let me give you some of the stuff that has really given me some insight the past two weeks in this study. It has to do with understand the difference between gifts of leadership and administration as well as the gifts of service and helps. I have used a book by David Francis to help with this study. Here are those insights:

the differences between leadership and administration ...

VISION
leaders recieve and communicate and the vision; administrators are the first to hear and understand the vision
leaders see big picture of God's vision; administrators understand the details and clarifies
a leader is an architect; an administrator is a contractor

DECISIONS
leaders use their intuition; administrators use the facts

RELATIONSHIPS
leaders are comfortable in a large setting; administrators are better one on one or in small groups

the differences in Service and Helps gifts ...

INSTRUCTIONS
service jumps in and gets done; helps waits for instruction

RESOURCES
service will go get the resources; helps waits until they have resources

MOTIVATION
service is motivated to complete the project; helps wants to please a person

RELATIONSHIPS
service is more short-term and project oriented; helps is more long-term and people are of primary importance.

Understanding these differences may clarify the place God has for you and me in His church and in His grand scheme of things. His way is best and helps each of us understand that it takes everyone for the church to work that it is supposed to work!

1 Corinthians 12:4-7 (NLT) --- There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
