believe God can // Monday E-Devotion

Psalm 127:1-2 (NLT) --- Unless the Lord builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Unless the L ord protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good. It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones.

Remember the story about the little train that could? It is a story of perseverance and straining to complete a task right in front of you. We learn to keep on - keeping on and do all we can to succeed.

Another old saying puts it this way: work like it all depends on you and pray like it all depends on God.

I am not sure what you think about those two points of illustration, but I believe it is time for the church to believe God. It is time for us to let God stretch our faith and for God to show up in awesome and huge ways that will shake the world around us and prove that He is God.

Those two illustrations reminded me this morning that without God, I am sunk. I am a failure and useless. Best part about it...God is with me and He is for me. The same is true for you. God wants to build and work in and through our lives. His desire is for us to trust Him and let Him show the world how awesome He is.

What gets in the way of people seeing God in our lives? We do. That is right. We sometimes get in the way. It can be for many reasons, but # 1 is the point where we just don't believe God or our faith won't allow us to press on.

Yesterday, I shared a message with our church about our core value of Creativity. The story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel is awesome and points people to God. It is found in 1 Kings 18:20-46. People saw God because Elijah was a man of Faith and believed God for the best. What did God do? God showed up and showed everyone that He is God. What would have happened had Elijah done nothing? People would have not met the one true God.

I want to challenge you and me to let others see, be impressed by and be led to fall on their faces in awe of God. Here is what the Bible says about the people around Elijah on that day:

1 Kings 18:39 (NLT) --- And when all the people saw it, they fell face down on the ground and cried out, "The L ord—he is God! Yes, the Lord is God!"

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
