God is at the center // Wednesday E-Devotion

The music that really turns me on is either running toward God or away from God. Both recognize the pivot, that God is at the center of the jaunt. --- Bono, lead singer of U2

It amazes me that people finally get it. No, I am not talking about the man I have just quoted. What I am talking about is the world in crisis turning to Jesus. Mark it down, check the history. Every time something significant and painful hurts us we turn toward God as a people and as a nation.

That is not different. It is a fact. Many times it has happened, yet each time there is a turning toward God and a turning away.

Honestly, I love the take that Bono has on this. Watch him in the media and when he is given an opportunity to make a difference. No matter the situation, something is going to be positive about God and to help people. We are watching a celebrity who is radical for stuff that is anti God. We hear stuff that is from God and about God and moral all over the place.

Ephesians 5:16 (nlt) --- Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days.

Colossians 4:5 (nlt) --- Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity.

We are continuing our series at The Community Fellowship called Heroes, and I am looking for people who stand out in the crowd, who stand for something strong and lead people to do the same. It is people who fear God, not people. It is people who make a splash, a big one, when they are looking at the needs of the world.

No, I am not making Bono a saint, but I am saying that here is a guy, like him or not, that is making a difference. He admits he is not perfect. He is real, and he talks about God.

A hero is someone willing to lead people to see Jesus. They don't stop speeding trains or foil bank robberies. They step out to put others first in their lives. God is at the center for them, for the hero. Are you a hero for someone? We ought to be.

Ephesians 4:1 (nlt) --- ...lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
