HEROES // Friday E-Devotion

Who are our heroes?

Superman, Michael Jordan, Jeff Gordon, Peyton Manning, Gene Simmons, Michael Jackson, Sipderman? (Just a reminder that the Spiderman 3 movie comes out today!)

Some are heroes. Some are not. We need to ask ourselves what a hero really is? We will get all kinds of answers and thoughts about heroes. But it is always plain to see that a hero is someone who does something or is able to do something extra ordinary.

I've been keeping up with the TV series Heroes and enjoying every episode. In fact, we start at new series at church this Sunday called Heroes where we will look at what it takes to be a hero.

They are all around us. Yep. Sitting next to you at school. Driving next to you on the road. Across the room at McDonals and everywhere you go. There are heroes. Maybe even starring at you in the mirror Heroes are people who have great faith and lead others to have great faith.

One of my favorite verses about heroes is this one:

Acts 15:26 (nlt) --- who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

What are we willing to do so people will see and know Jesus? Are we willing to leave our comfortable lives behind and do things that others won't even attempt? It takes guts and it takes vision. I've got that and some of you do as well. That makes us have the ability to be heroes.

No we cannot catch speeding bullets in our teeth (and I won't try). No we cannot jump over tall buildings. But we can head out on a journey of faith that points people to Jesus. We can give all we got so that others will have. We can be focused on something other than self and just a few people around us.

Heroes make a big difference in the world around them. I invite you to be a Hero. Will you join me?

Titus 2:7 (nlt) --- And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good works of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching.

1 John 3:16 (nlt) --- We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters.

It took guts for Peter to get out of the boat and walk on water at least for a few steps. Some call him stupid. Others call him a failure. The guy is a hero because he would do whatever for Jesus.

Yeah, he put his foot in his mouth sometimes. Yeah, he messed up. Why would Jesus use a man like Peter?

He was willing. He bacame a hero. I can. You can, too.

If you are close enough, join us at The Community Fellowship as we begin our Heroes series this Sunday.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
