you are important // Friday E-Devotion

Yesterday I took some extra time to seek a quiet place where I could read, think and spend some time with God. It was refreshing once again. Margaret Feinberg's book, The Organic God, continues to encourage my socks off. (We still have a few copies of the book for sale at church for a HUGE discount price.)

She shared how a special professor at her college taught her class an unforgettable lesson. The professor was Maya Angelou, and for the first three weeks of class she had her students memorize the name everyone in the class. Feinberg wrote:

"More than a decade later, the greatest lesson I learned from Maya Angelou is from those first three weeks. She did more than teach about human dignity - she allowed me to experience and partake of it firsthand. I don't remember the names of my classmates, but I still remember the sense of empowerment I felt when I called on someone's name and when mine was called upon..." (page 67)

Luke 12:7 (nlt) --- And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.

John 10:3
(nlt) --- The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

You are important to God. He not only knows your name, but He knows and loves everything about you. The old phrase "God doesn't make junk" is so very true. He created you. He loves you. He cares for you.

Fact is, we can let others know this truth as we care for them. It is that simple. Remember and call them by name. Give a hug when needed or offer to pray for someone at a specific time. People are not only important to God, they are important to God's children...you and me.

One of the things that I LOVE about The Community Fellowship is that when new friends come visit they tell us that they were made to feel special (that is no accident, and we are going to get better at this). It is not a gimmick but our calling to let others know how much God loves them and how important they are to God. Does that make sense? It ought to.

1 John 4:16 (nlt) --- We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love.God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.

Call someone by name, pay extra attention to a person, do something to let someone know how important they are to you and how important they are to God. As Margaret Feinberg said...it is empowering!

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
