40 day flood // Tuesday E-Devotion

Genesis 7:17 (nlt) --- For forty days the flood waters grew deeper, covering the ground and lifting the boat high above the earth.

We have been on our new home for almost 40 days without any trouble (almost). Then late last night ...

I was busy. Remote in hand flipping from channel to channel just trying to keep my eyes open. My bride was at the computer preparing for a new preschool year to begin. The kids had gone to bed. Then the flood began. First, a shower was heard coming from the area of our basement bathroom. Next, approach the kitchen we hear the sound of rushing water, and upon closer inspection notice that water is spraying from the area behind the brand new dishwasher. What do we do? The 40 day flood...

Let me remind you that I am not very handy. I did manage to cut off the water and turn off the electricity to the appliance (and much of the house). Then it hit me, "what's the battle plan?" Pray first. Ask for help. Think hard. That's what we did.

A man in our church who owns a hardware store got the call after the first pray. He gave great advise (waking him from a deep sleep). Off to the 24 hour Wal-Mart I went, and then the next prayer. I called the local fire department (which I am not a member of), and they had what I need ... a wet / dry vac.

Julie and I worked for the next hour or so removing the water from the kitchen pool (I mean floor) and from the soon to be closet in the basement bathroom (if it was finished, my clothes would have been soaked). After it was over, I sat down with my remote in hand flipping channels once again, but this time I was thinking. "Did the plan work?"

Trust God and pray ...

Philippians 4:6 (nlt) --- Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.

Get the advise of godly people you know ...

Proverbs 15:22 (nlt) --- Plans go wrong for lack of advice;many advisers bring success.

Work it out, don't worry and watch what God does ...

Proverbs 12:14 (nlt) --- Wise words bring many benefits, and hard work brings rewards.

When I do things on my way and my own way, I end up with more trouble. Here is what I read this morning in my daily reading:

Proverbs 14:12 (nlt) --- There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death.

When trouble comes, trust God, get good advise, work hard and watch God work. Your 40 day flood will come to an end.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
