14 years of this // Tuesday E-Devotion

1 Peter 3:7 (nasb) --- You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way...and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.

Proverbs 18:22 (nasb) --- He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the LORD.

For years I have related something like this about our marriage, "We have been married 14 years, and it has been 10 of the best years of our lives." That is lie. Big time.

Today, my precious wife and I celebrate 14 years of marriage, and all 14 years have been awesome and a blessing from God. That's the facts. Nothing less than a gift from God, Julie is and marriage is. God is the one who created the union and who keeps us coming back to us time and time again.

I can remember the day, almost like it was yesterday. A sweet older lady in the church I was pastor of asked me to call her grandson's ex-girlfriend 'cause she would be good for me. You heard me right, her grandson's ex-girlfriend. After a few weeks, I made the call and met Julie the next night and had dinner the next. You could say, "the rest is history."

Timeline for ya ... first date (Jan 1993), I chased her (Jan & Feb 1993), engaged by putting a ring in a beautiful red rose (Feb 12 1993), planning a wedding (March thru Aug 1993) and the wedding day which I cried all the way through (Sept 4 1993). Yes, the rest is history.

3 Kids, 9 houses, 7 jobs, lots of cars later we are still together, living life and sharing along the way.

Our marriage is not perfect. That is because I am not perfect (neither is she), but we are gaining in that respect. I can say that she is more beautiful and I am more in love with her than ever. Marriage takes work, yet with a woman like mine, it's kind of easy work.

She puts up with me. She helps me. She is my partner in ministry at church and beyond. She tries to fix me (often). Then, she is there all the time, good and bad, happy and sad. And I like that.

Life is meant to be shared. After 14 years of marriage, I give thanks to God for the love of my life...Julie.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
