what it takes to show His love // Friday E-Devotion

Philippians 2:3 (nlt) --- Don't be selfish; don't try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.

Our tag line at The Community Fellowship and what we strive to do with all we are and all we have is Demonstrate the Love of GOD to Our Community .  Whether it is an event, offering, big push or worship, this is where we head.  It guides us and allows us to impact the world for just.

BUT if you head and heart are not in the right place, this is impossible.  Think about that.  Humility and pride are polar opposites.  They cannot work together or even live together.  For us to be successful with what this goal is at The Community, we have to check everything at the door and see that Jesus is first in all things.

One of my favorite blogs is from Greg Groeschel at Lifechurch and is called swerve.  This week they have written some awesome stuff that I want to leave you with and ask our church to really pray over (go to that blog and read the other notes on this subject).  The thread is about Spiritual Esteem, and yesterday's entry was awesome.  So, here it is:

Spiritual Esteem 4 (of 4)

I'm fairly certain I read the following thoughts somewhere. (I found these in an old journal, but I didn't note the source. This sounds like something Tim Keller would say, but I???m not sure if it was him, my adaption of his words, or someone else.)
Let's contrast false-esteem and spiritual-esteem:

False-Esteem: I do good things, therefore God accepts me.
Spiritual-Esteem: I'm accepted because of what Jesus did for me, therefore I do good things.

False-Esteem: I try hard, so God loves me.
Spiritual-Esteem: God loves me radically, so I try hard.

False-Esteem: I produce, therefore God is pleased.
Spiritual-Esteem: God is pleased with me in Christ, therefore He produces through me.

False-Esteem: Self is the center.
Spiritual-Esteem: God is the center.

Philippians 3:3 (nlt) --- For we who worship by the Spirit of God are the ones who are truly circumcised. We rely on what Christ Jesus has done for us. We put no confidence in human effort,

PRAYER
Dorothy Kasey, Russ's mom, continues to need our prayers as she battles Leukemia and pray for Michelle as she travels from California.  Pray for our event to feed the hungry of our area this Sunday.  Kasim and Cindy Adams and their family appreciate all your prayers and continue to need them.  Pray for a family heavy on my heart this morning, and praise God for 2 answered requests.

E-DEVOTIONS are sent on week days from Michael Harrison, lead Pastor of The Community Fellowship in Collinsville, Virginia.  E-devotions are intended to encourage your faith in Jesus and your walk with Him.  To subscribe, cancel or change your subscription, send an e-mail to Michael at mharrison@thecommunityfellowship.org .

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
