national day of prayer [+] Thursday E-Devotion

Today is the National Day of Prayer.  In this distinctly different e-mail, you will receive several different prayers from Scripture.  Be encouraged to use these as you spend extra time today praying especially for our nation and for God to move in our country and beyond.  Remember that we must "pray without stopping" ( 1 Thessalonians 5:17).

(click on the Bible references to read the prayers)

Lord's Prayer --- Matthew 6:9-13

Jesus' prayer for us --- John 17

Paul's prayer for people to see and know God --- Ephesians 3:14-21

David's prayer for protection --- Psalm 63

David's authentic prayer and hope in God --- Psalm 42

(now for various verses on prayer)

1 Peter 3:12 (nlt) --- The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right, and his ears are open to their prayers. But the Lord turns his face against those who do evil.

James 5:16 (nlt) --- Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

Proverbs 15:8 (nlt) --- The Lord detests the sacrifice of the wicked, but he delights in the prayers of the upright.

Hebrews 7:25 (nasb) --- (Jesus prays for us) Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

And my favorite and life verse is:

James 1:5 (nlt) --- If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.
Father, I ask that you teach us to pray but even more make our your people a people of prayer.  Touch our leaders and our nation.  Protect our troops and give them your favor and your presence.  Touch those that we come in contact with today that we may leave them with a glimpse of who you are and of your love.  Thank you for confident access to address you and to pray to you.  You are a kind and gracious God.  May we lead others to see you and may we have the character of people who really do pray.  In Jesus' name...Amen.

One of of my pet-peeves is saying you will pray for someone and then not doing it.  Today (and beyond), when someone asks you to pray for them or about something, stop right then and take a few seconds to pray with that person or even to pray silently.  That will change our patterns of pray and will change people's lives.

Spend time praying today.  Blessings to you....

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
