sweet spot [+] Friday E-Devotion

A few months ago I shared with you Ben's story of finding the place where he fits (leaving a church job that was comfortable).  Best called, the sweet spot.  That is about finding the place where you fit because of how God made you and has gifted you.  It is a great place.  It is hard to find.  It honestly is this ... a God thang!

Today I have taken somewhat of a journey to dig deeper and to ask more questions about that place.  For me it is where my vision is clearest and where I know that God is working in and through me with the least amount of distraction.  I see this place is not easy.  Satan doesn't want me there.  He is doing his part to see that I cannot find it.

Hey.  The same is true for you.  You will never find that sweet spot, the sweetest place until you let God be everything.  Think about it.

Colossians 3:3-4 (nlt) --- For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God.  And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory.

Galatians 2:20 (nlt) --- My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Man, those are tough verse.  Just to get our minds around them takes checking some of ourselves, our thoughts and feelings at the door.  We have to loose ourselves in Christ.  That is a huge deal, but I am beginning to believe that finding our sweet spot means that more of God and less of me is a must.

Here is a quote a friend gave me last night and has given me much to chew on today:

"The place where God calls you is the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet." --- Frederick Buechner quoted in John Eldredge's book Wild at Heart

You know that I love and long for creativity and to be the most creative that I can be (part of my sweet spot).  I read this and was highly convicted as a father and a leader of God's people:

"My son and daughter both have that eyes-wide-open unabashed "wow at the entire world" quality that makes my heart melt. I'm convinced that kids all start out a creative genius, a sponge that soaks up and dispenses the world back to you with their own unique spin on it."  -- Ken Wilson from NewSpring Church on his blog

Did you get that?  Think it through.  I want that 'deepest gladness' and 'creative genius' to fill up my life.  I pray God will, in me and in you, guide us to that sweet spot!

Romans 8:11 (nlt) --- The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.
That is really living.

Catalyst ticket arrived

My ticket to the Catalyst Conference, in Atlanta Oct 8-10, just arrived. I'm excited!

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
